Il numero di formiche che vivono in ogni dato istante e’ stato stimato, prudentemente,tra 1 e 10 milioni di miliardi. Se quest’ultima stima fosse corretta, giacche’ in media il peso di ogni essere umano e’, molto approssimativamente, 1-2 milioni di volte quello di una normale formica, allora formiche ed esseri umani avrebbero la stessa biomassa totale.
